Mother’s Day 2026 · Southwest Florida
For most people, Mother’s Day used to be easy. A card, brunch, flowers, and a long hug that meant more than mom could put into words.
But things shift when mom gets older. Maybe she’s not as mobile as she was. Maybe she’s dealing with memory changes. Maybe dad is gone, and she’s been on her own for a while now. Whatever it is, the day starts to feel different. And figuring out what would actually make it special isn’t as obvious as it used to be.
If you’re an adult child or grandkid in Southwest Florida trying to figure out how to honor an aging mom this year, this guide is for you.
The Reality
Why Mother’s Day Hits Different When Mom is Older
A lot of the families we work with describe Mother’s Day with an aging mom as bittersweet. There’s joy, sure. But there’s also that quiet knowledge that mom isn’t who she was ten years ago. Maybe last year was the last time you heard her tell a certain story. Maybe she didn’t recognize a grandkid’s face on a recent visit.
Common things adult children feel this time of year:
Guilt about how often you visit
Sadness about how much she’s changed
Pressure to make this year feel “perfect”
Frustration when she can’t enjoy what she used to
There’s no script for any of this. The best Mother’s Days with aging moms aren’t the most expensive ones. They’re the ones that fit where she is right now and make her feel seen.
Gift Ideas
Mother’s Day Gifts That Actually Land
Standard Mother’s Day gifts (perfume, jewelry, chocolate boxes) tend to miss the mark for older moms. Here’s what we’ve seen actually work:
A photo bookApps like Shutterfly and Mixbook make this easy. For moms with memory issues, a labeled photo book becomes a reminiscence tool she’ll come back to again and again.
Comfortable clothesAdaptive shirts with magnetic closures. Soft cardigans. Slip-on shoes. If her mobility’s changed, comfort beats style every time.
A handwritten letterIt sounds small. It isn’t. Stories from your childhood, things you remember about her, things you’re grateful for. That’s a gift that doesn’t have an expiration date.
A framed family treeEspecially meaningful for moms who’ve lost siblings or a spouse. Something tangible that shows the family she built.
Her favorite mealMade by you, or ordered from the place she loves but can’t get to anymore. Food carries memory like nothing else.
A few hours of in-home helpMost adult children don’t think of this. A few hours a week of companion care so mom has someone to chat with, prep meals, and run errands. A gift she’ll feel every week.

Mother’s Day 2026 Events Across Southwest Florida
These are the actual Mother’s Day events happening across our service area this Sunday. We’ve pulled the real ones with times and prices so you’re not guessing. Reservations fill up by midweek for most of these, so call early.
Pick the Right Outing for Mom’s Needs
Some events on this list are louder, busier, or more physically demanding than others. A quick guide for picking based on mom’s situation:
Mobility issues or wheelchair: stick to plated sit-down spots like the Ritz-Carlton Naples High Tea, Pier 22, Sale e Pepe, or T-Michaels. Skip boats, beach walks, and big buffets where she’d need to keep getting up.
Dementia or sensory sensitivity: quiet and structured wins. Sarasota Art Museum brunch, the Ritz-Carlton High Tea, or a calm botanical garden visit. Avoid loud venues like Tibby’s, the Zoo, and big crowded buffets.
Tires easily but still mobile: short and sweet. Mother’s Day at The Bay (free, outdoor, can leave anytime), Wonder Gardens, or a 90-minute brunch and then home for a nap.
Doing well, up for adventure: any of these work. The boat cruises, ZooTampa, or a getaway weekend at South Seas all become real options.

If Mom Has Dementia
Mother’s Day With a Mom Who Has Dementia or Alzheimer’s
If mom’s living with dementia, the standard Mother’s Day playbook usually doesn’t work anymore. Restaurant noise overstimulates. Long drives confuse. New environments raise her anxiety. The big productions you used to plan don’t fit. That’s okay.
What tends to work better:
Keep the day short. Two hours of good time beats four exhausting ones.
Stick close to her routine.Same meals, same nap time, same rhythm.
Bring music she loved when she was young.Music memory often hangs around long after other memory fades.
Look at old photos together.Don’t quiz her. Just narrate gently. “That’s you and Aunt Linda at the lake.”
Don’t correct her.If she calls you by your sister’s name, let it go. Connection beats correction.
Pick one activity, not five.A 20-minute garden walk. A scoop of her favorite ice cream. That’s enough.
For families dealing with later-stage dementia, our in-home Alzheimer’s and dementia care gives you specialized support every day. Mother’s Day in particular can be a meaningful day to bring in extra help so the family can focus on being there.
Long-Distance Family
When You Live Far Away
A lot of the families we serve in SW Florida have adult kids who live across the country. Mom retired down here. The kids built lives elsewhere. If you can’t be there in person on May 10, here are real ways to make the day count:
Schedule the callDon’t say “I’ll call sometime Sunday.” Pick a time, tell her ahead, and stick to it. For moms with dementia especially, knowing when you’re calling matters.
Send food from a local Florida placeHave something delivered from Pinchers, The French Press, or wherever she actually loves. Local feels more personal than a national flower service.
Hire a companion caregiver for the dayOne of the most popular Mother’s Day requests we get from out-of-state adult children. A trained caregiver spends a few hours with mom: meals, conversation, a walk, photo album time. So she’s not alone on the day. Through our companion care service we can usually set this up with just a few days’ notice.
Send a video letterNot a quick text. A real recorded video with a story, a memory, something specific to her. She’ll watch it more than once.
A physical card AND something localA card alone is fine. A card plus a Florida wildflower bouquet from a local SW Florida florist is a tier-one Mother’s Day gift.
The Quiet Gift
The Gift of In-Home Care
For adult children watching mom struggle with the daily stuff (bathing, meals, mobility, medication), Mother’s Day raises a question: would professional help actually be the most meaningful gift this year?
We don’t say that to be salesy. We say it because every May, families call us in the days right after Mother’s Day with the same story: “I went to visit mom, and I realized she’s not okay. The fridge was empty. She was wearing the same clothes from yesterday. The mail was piled up. I want to set something up.”
If you’ve already noticed the warning signs and Mother’s Day is the day you confirm it, that’s not a bad time to act. We offer:
Free in-home consultations All six counties: Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough
No long-term contracts Start with a few hours a week, adjust anytime
Same-day to 48-hour starts If she needs help this week, we can usually have someone in the home that fast
Care plans built around mom Bathing, meals, companionship, medications, dementia care, or 24-hour coverage
I started A Perfect Choice Home Care because I wanted families to have the kind of care I’d want for my own mom. Every Mother’s Day I think about the daughters and sons who feel pulled in too many directions: work, kids of their own, and a parent in another state who shouldn’t be alone.
If that’s you this Mother’s Day, please call us. Not to sign up for anything. Just to talk through what’s going on with mom and figure out whether some local SW Florida help would take the weight off. Even a single phone call can change how next year feels for your family.
