The surgery went fine. The first two weeks at home are the part nobody plans for.
Discharge day feels like a finish line right up until you pull into the driveway. Then it is just you, a stack of paperwork, a walker that does not fit through the bathroom door, and someone who cannot get off the couch without help. Most families start looking for a post surgery caregiver about forty eight hours after they work out how much of this they are now doing alone. Post hospital home care is short-term by nature. Two weeks after a knee, six weeks after a hip, a month after a cardiac event, sometimes just the stretch until the family can rearrange their schedules. We build it that way on purpose: heavy coverage the first few days, tapering as your loved one gets steadier, ending when it is genuinely not needed. The First Seventy Two Hours
This is where most of the trouble happens. Anesthesia has not fully cleared, the pain schedule is still being sorted out, and nobody has learned the new way of moving yet. We staff the first days heavier than the rest and pull back as things settle, rather than the other way around.
Getting Up and Sitting Down
Off the bed, onto the toilet, out of a chair that is suddenly too low. After a hip or a knee there are movement precautions to respect, and a caregiver who knows them guides the motion instead of hauling on the operated side. Every caregiver we send is trained in safe transfer technique.
The New Medication Schedule
People come home from a hospital stay with a list that looks nothing like the one they left with. Different times, new pain medication, something to stop and something to start. We keep the reminders on schedule and write down what was taken and when, so the follow-up appointment starts with facts.
Rides to Follow-Up Appointments
Nobody drives for a while after surgery, and the follow-up calendar is busiest exactly when driving is off the table. We handle the trips to the surgeon, to therapy, and to the pharmacy, which is usually the one thing adult children are most relieved to hand off.
Meals, Laundry, and Bending
Half of recovery is a list of things your loved one is not supposed to bend, twist, or lift to do. That covers most of running a house. We take the cooking, the laundry basket, the low cupboards, and the trash, so the restrictions get followed instead of quietly ignored.

The hands-on, everyday part of recovering at home. Helping your loved one in and out of bed and to the bathroom without a fall. Bathing and dressing while movement is restricted. Meals, laundry, and the housework that bending restrictions rule out. Medication reminders on the new schedule. Driving to follow-up appointments. And plain company, because recovery is boring, and boredom is why people overdo it on day four. What we do not do is wound care, injections, IV lines, or therapy exercises. Those belong to clinicians, and we work alongside them.
They are two different things, and families are caught out by this constantly. After a qualifying hospital stay, Medicare may authorize a home health benefit, which sends a nurse or a therapist to the house for short visits, often a few times a week. That is skilled care, it comes from a Medicare-certified agency, and A Perfect Choice is not one. What Medicare does not send is somebody to help at two in the morning, or make lunch, or get your father to the bathroom safely on a Sunday. That is the gap we fill, and the two run side by side all the time.
Two weeks out is comfortable. One week works. The day of discharge is doable and we do it often, but then you are making decisions in a hospital corridor instead of at your kitchen table. Booking early also lets the caregiver come by beforehand and meet your loved one while they are still themselves, which makes the first morning home far less strange for everybody.
Shorter than they expect, most of the time. A knee replacement often runs two to three weeks of daily help. A hip tends toward four to six, because the precautions last longer. Cardiac events and longer hospital stays vary a lot, since deconditioning from a week in a bed takes its own time to undo. We reassess with you every week and we will tell you when we think you can cut back. Ending the service early is a good outcome, not a lost sale.
They are the most common reason Southwest Florida families call us for this. Both come with movement rules. No bending past ninety degrees, no crossing the legs, no twisting on the operated side. Those are easy to break by accident when you are just trying to pick something up off the floor. Our caregivers work around the restrictions rather than pointing them out afterward. We also help with the equipment nobody rehearses with, the raised toilet seat, the walker in a narrow hallway, the shower bench.
Home care. We do not provide or bill skilled nursing or therapy.
